Rare MOKELUMNE HILL CA Calaveras County Old West

WEEKLY CALAVERAS CHRONICLE, Mokelumne Hill, California, June 25, 1870 * Rare Old West title * Gold mining An early issue from this county made famous by Mark Twain. Mokelumne Hill was one of the richest gold mining towns in California. Founded in 1848, the placers were so rich that the miners risked starvation rather than head to Stockton to replenish their supplies. Soon after, gold was discovered in the nearby hills, so much so that miners were restricted to claims of 16 sq. ft., and yet many of those claims were reported to have paid up to $20,000. By 1850 the town was one of the largest in the area, with its population reaching as high as 15,000 . Today the population is less than 700. Four pages, various news & ads of the day, various archival mends throughout, chipping at the right margin but not affecting text. Fragile & must be handled carefully.

Four years earlier, a band of Kiowa raiders killed Johanna’s parents and sister; sparing the little girl, they raised her as one of their own. Recently rescued by the U.S. army, the ten-year-old has once again been torn away from the only home she knows.Their 400-mile journey south through unsettled territory and unforgiving terrain proves difficult and at times dangerous. Johanna has forgotten the English language, tries to escape at every opportunity, throws away her shoes, and refuses to act “civilized.” Y...

Billy The Kid As He Was Reported In Newspapers From The 1870's And 1880's

Billy The Kid As He Was Reported In

We have seen countless movies, books, magazine articles and television documentaries about Billy the Kid. Some of these are more believable than others. There were even men who lived well into the 20th century who claimed they were Billy the Kid. I thought it might be interesting to see what information was available to the public before and shortly after the death of Billy the Kid. I am not claiming that any of the newspaper articles you are about to read are accurate, but they are definitely what the public had available in the late 1870’s and early 1880’s. Some articles lead to doubt but some are quite believable. Some are more believable than what we are able to read and view in our present time. Billy the Kid was born Henry McCarty in New York City in 1859. He was sometimes known as Henry Antrim, William Antrim, Kid Antrim and William H. Bonney but we remember him as “Billy the Kid”. Billy was killed July 14, 1881 in Fort Sumner, New Mexico. Fort Sumner has special interest for me as I was born on Fort Sumner Army Air Field, now the Fort Sumner Municipal Airport, in 1945. We will also look at the death of Pat Garrett and the trial of his killer, Wayne Brazel
