Flowers of Silk & Gold: Four Centuries of Ottoman Embroidery

Flowers of Silk & Gold: Four Centuries of

Until now, the rich textile tradition of the Ottoman Empire has rarely been been given the detailed consideration it deserves. Sumru Belger Krody here examines the practice of the intricate art of embroidery, which united the various ethnic and religious groups of the empire under a single aesthetic and gave rise to flowers of silk and gold that still enchant our imagination. The Imperial City of Istanbul was the seat of power of the Ottoman Empire for nearly five hundred years, and like most imperial capitals it was a center for trade. The bazaars of this cosmopolitan, ethnically diverse city were famous for the embroidered textiles produced both by men in the city's workshops, and by women in the seclusion of the harems. In the decoration of their homes, the Ottomans mirrored the colors and abundance of their astonishing gardens; the wall hangings, cushions, and divan covers of the private houses of the city, products of the most exquisite design on the finest and rarest of cloth, combined to give an impression of opulence and luxury to astonished Western eyes. Embroidered textiles served as furniture and ornament in daily life and during rites of passage, while their production and sale provided an income for their makers, who occupied every level of Ottoman society up to the...

Early American Embroidery Designs: An 1815 Manuscript Album with Over 190 Patterns (Dover Embroidery, Needlepoint)

Early American Embroidery Designs: An 1815 Manuscript Album

Though it was common for women of the 18th and 19th centuries to keep personal albums of their own needlework designs, few of these hand-drawn pattern books survive intact. This rare volume, signed and dated 1815 by Elizabeth M. Townshend, appears to be just such a collection — an authentic treasury of embroidery designs dating from the early days of the Republic.Brimming with nearly 200 timeless, functional designs, this priceless sourcebook ranges from highly stylized repeat patterns, to more realistic floral bouquets, to traditional patterns for cutwork edgings, to large-scale motifs suitable for crewel embroidery. You'll find miniature baskets (a popular motif of the day) and dainty leaf patterns, planned perhaps for a petticoat or waistcoat. Other lovely designs are ideal for embellishing the collar or cuffs of a favorite dress, adding an elegant touch to linens, curtains, undergarments, tablecloths, etc. While most of the patterns are small in scale and probably intended for use with silk threads, several are particularly effective worked in wool. The stitches Elizabeth Townshend would have used are the same stitches we use today — seed stitch, outline, and stem stitches, chain stitch, loop stitch, and herringbone stitch — making these appealing designs as accessible t...

Pan-American Redwork Patterns ; the full set: all

Between May and November 1901 Buffalo New York hosted a world's fair titled the Pan-American Exhibition. For most folks it is remembered as the place where President McKinley was shot. In quilting and Embroidery circles It is remembered for the Pan-American quilt blocks. Also know as redwork or penny squares These designs were sold pre-stamped on linen. Some of the designs sold at the exposition had been part of the Redwork embroidery catalog since the 1880's – some were more recent but created prior to the expositions opening like the Portraits of the new king and queen of England. President McKinley and Vice President Roosevelt. Some like the exhibition buildings were created Just for the fair. The Writing below the McKinley and Roosevelt blocks changed after McKinley was assassinated. Since the patterns were pre-stamped on linen those in later decades who wished to recreate some of the blocks had to look for quilts to trace a pattern from. The first five Pan-American pattern booklets are made from such later hand made tracings of quilt designs.

Renaissance Patterns for Lace, Embroidery and Needlepoint (Dover Knitting, Crochet, Tatting, Lace)

Renaissance Patterns for Lace, Embroidery and Needlepoint (Dover

Old Venetian lace has always been considered one of the high points of the textile arts, what with its imaginative design, technical brilliance, and universal appeal to all lands and times. It was the ancestor of most of the important laces that have since been made in Europe, and surviving specimens are the treasured possessions of the great museums of the world.Federico Vinciolo is one of the masters within this art. A leading Venetian designer, he was summoned in France to the court of Henry II, probably by Catherine de Medici, where he had the monopoly on manufacturing lace neck ruffs. In 1587 Vinciolo published a collection of his best patterns and designs, Les singuliers et nouveaux pourtraicts, which went through more than a dozen printings in France and Italy. It remains one of the basic books in the history of lace. For the modern needleworker who wishes to recapture the charm of this antique lace, Vinciolo's book offers 98 plates of fine patterns and designs in various techniques: needlepoint, darned netting, point coupé, counted thread work, and others. These include geometric forms, exuberant treatment of classical motives, Italian and Levantine designs, and mush else that the modern worker, able to pick out a pattern, can re-create. Most of this material is nowhere...

Victorian Monograms Motifs & Borders: Charted Designs for Needlepoint & Cross Stitch

Victorian Monograms Motifs & Borders: Charted Designs for

Monograms have always been a fashionable way for embroiderers to personalize fashion and home decor. In contrast to the subtle white-on-white embroidery often found on bed linens and handkerchiefs, the exuberantly colorful designs that follow are more modern than you might expect from Victorian needlework. This collection is reproduced from German textile designer Friedrich Fischbach’s work titled “Bunt-Stickerei-Vorlagen” (colorful embroidery patterns) published around 1870. These individual letters, entwined monograms, motifs and borders are a remarkable resource for modern needleworkers to use on their own projects. Designs charted on graph paper are a universal language which can be translated into needlepoint and counted cross stitch, with each square on the pattern representing a single stitch. Author's Note: Please be aware that older alphabets may not contain all letters. For example, "I" and "J" were often considered interchangeable, and many alphabets contain only one or the other, not both. The elaborate diagonal monogram series ("L" and "M" are shown on the front cover) does not include "J", "X" or "Y".
