Death in Glacier National Park: Stories of Accidents and Foolhardiness in the Crown of the Continent
Death in Glacier National Park: Stories of Accidents
Adventures in the wilderness can be dramatic and deadly. Glacier National Park’s death records date back to January 1913, when a man froze to death while snowshoeing between Cut Bank and St. Mary. All told, 260 people have died or are presumed to have died in the park during the first hundred years of its existence. One man fell into a crevasse on East Gunsight Peak while skiing its steep north face, and another died while moonlight biking on the Sun Road. A man left his wife and five children at the Apgar picnic area and disappeared on Lake McDonald. His boat was found halfway up the west shore wedged between rocks with the propeller stuck in gravel. Collected here are some the most gripping accounts in park history of these unfortunate events caused by natural forces or human folly.

The Wild Inside: A Novel of Suspense (Glacier Mystery Series Book 1)
The Wild Inside: A Novel of Suspense (Glacier
A haunting crime novel set in Glacier National Park about a man who finds himself at odds with the dark heart of the wild—and the even darker heart of human nature. It was a clear night in Glacier National Park. Fourteen-year-old Ted Systead and his father were camping beneath the rugged peaks and starlit skies when something unimaginable happened: a grizzly bear attacked Ted’s father and dragged him to his death. Now, twenty years later, as Special Agent for the Department of the Interior, Ted gets called back to investigate a crime that mirrors the horror of that night. Except this time, the victim was tied to a tree before the mauling. Ted teams up with one of the park officers—a man named Monty, whose pleasant exterior masks an all-too-vivid knowledge of the hazardous terrain surrounding them. Residents of the area turn out to be suspicious of outsiders and less than forthcoming. Their intimate connection to the wild forces them to confront nature, and their fellow man, with equal measures of reverence and ruthlessness. As the case progresses with no clear answers, more than human life is at stake—including that of the majestic creature responsible for the attack. Ted’s search for the truth ends up leading him deeper into the wilderness than he ever imagined, on the ...

Wild River Pioneers: Adventures in the Middle Fork of the Flathead, Great Bear Wilderness, and Glacier National Park
Wild River Pioneers: Adventures in the Middle Fork
Follow author John Fraley as he reconstructs the events surrounding the exciting pioneer history and spectacular landscape of the Middle Fork of the Flathead River Drainage in and around the Great Bear Wilderness and Glacier National Park. In Wild River Pioneers, Fraley brings alive the history of Montana s wildest river drainage by telling stories of some of its most riveting historical characters. The stories feature shootouts, murders, a hanging, a train robbery, marauding grizzly bears, lost graves, gold prospecting, and an ice cream-eating pet bear. Although the Middle Fork of the Flathead is the geographical stage for these stories, many of the pioneers and events have broader connections and appeal. It is hard to find more quirky old-timers than Slippery Bill Morrison, Libby Collins (the Cattle Queen of Montana), Josephine Doody (the Bootleg Lady of Glacier Park) and her notorious husband, Glacier Park Ranger Dan Doody, and George Snyder (Glacier Park Maverick). In the stories, you'll learn the relationship these old-timers had with the land and with the government officials who tried to regulate them.

National Parks: The American Experience, 4th Edition
National Parks: The American Experience, 4th
Completely revised for its fourth edition, National Parks: The American Experience tells the highly engaging story of how Americans invented and expanded the concept of national parks. A prominent adviser to the Ken Burns Emmy Award-winning documentary, "The National Parks: America's Best Idea," Alfred Runte is renowned as the nation's leading historian on the meaning and management of these treasured lands. Lavishly illustrated with period photographs, including eight pages of color paintings, National Parks: The American Experience has never been more beautiful or profound. This remains a stirring look into the lands that define America, from Yosemite and Yellowstone to wilderness Alaska. This is how we got our parks, and yes, how we have occasionally failed them, and when doing so how we have failed ourselves. "Civilization is the problem parks solve," Runte writes. At times, the national parks may seem as imperfect as they are exceptional; the point is that they are all we will ever have. Knowing that earlier America, and planning for the new America, still demands our humility to advance the best of both.
