Chicago: The Living Legends

Chicago: The Living

Best known as the wife of jazz legend Louis Armstrong, Lil Hardin Armstrong was an exciting performer in her own right. This CD, a recording of a Chicago session in 1961, is an excellent example of her later work, featuring superb Dixieland-style jazz with Armstrong's exuberant piano. The Dixieland pieces (including Kid Ory's "Muskrat Ramble") are fast-paced and colorful, complemented by a few blues pieces performed with an attractive, smooth laziness. There are also some original pieces here: "Boogie Me," "Clip Joint" (featuring a spirited vocal performance by Armstrong that makes one wish more of her singing was available on record), and "Eastown Boogie".; A somewhat obscure recording that is nonetheless required listening. --Genevieve Williams

Jazz Ladies 1924-1962

Jazz Ladies

In devoting themselves mainly to the singers among the ladies of jazz, the genres historians too often neglected to evaluate the importance of women who were instrumentalists. Its necessary to take a longer look at the work of these pioneering women who paved the way for the wonderful musicians of today. This release aims to take a new look at these female jazz instrumentalists, and presents a treasure trove of rare gems that have been rarely recorded until now. The swing era which began in the thirties allowed a few all-girl orchestras to have some success. There was Ina Ray Hutton and Her Melodeans, and The Harlem Playgirls, and then The International Sweethearts of Rhythm, widely regarded as the best of the female orchestras. It was from bands like these that a few soloists with original personalities emerged. The first were pianists, as the presence of a woman at the piano seemed better accepted than that of girls playing other instruments. These pianists included Mary Lou Williams, Marian McPartland and Barbara Carroll. It wasnt long before other instrumentalists began to emerge, such as trumpeters Valaida Snow, Dolly Jones, and Clora Bryant, and saxophonists LAna Webster-Hyams and Viola Burnside.

Born to Swing: Lil Hardin Armstrong's Life in Jazz

Born to Swing: Lil Hardin Armstrong's Life in

Here is the story of "Hot Miss Lil" Hardin Armstrong, legendary jazz pianist, composer, and bandleader--and a female pioneer on the music stage.Ever since she was a young girl, Lil Hardin played music with a beat. She jammed at home, at church, and even at her first job in a music store. At a time when women's only place in jazz was at the microphone, Lil earned a spot playing piano in Chicago's hottest band. She went on to achieve fame as a bandleader and composer, and "swung" with many of the greatest early jazz musicians, including her husband, Louis Armstrong. Award-winning author Mara Rockliff and acclaimed illustrator Michele Wood brilliantly capture the rhythms and passions of this jazz pioneer and legend whose music and story deserve to be heard. This biography contains strong back matter which includes archival images, further information about Lil, a list of some of her songs and recordings, a timeline, an author's note, and a bibliography.

The Girls in the Band Collector's

They wiggled, they jiggled, they wore low-cut gowns and short shorts, they kowtowed to the club owners and smiled at the customers. And they did it all, just to play the music they loved. In the 1930s and '40s, only men were truly accepted as jazz musicians, with women chiefly featured as vocalists. Yet hundreds of female instrumentalists toured the U.S. in glamorous all-girl bands or playing side by side with their male counterparts. Sadly, by the mid-1950s, female jazz musicians had virtually disappeared from the scene, their names and contributions to music forgotten. THE GIRLS IN THE BAND tells the poignant and heroic untold stories of female jazz and big band instrumentalists and their fascinating journeys from the late 1930s to the present day. The women profiled include trumpeter Clora Bryant, saxophonist Peggy Gilbert and Billie Rogers, a trumpeter in Woody Herman's band. Also appearing in this tribute to immensely talented yet unsung players are such acclaimed modern-day musicians as Herbie Hancock, Esperanza Spalding, Geri Allen, Anat Cohen, Jane Ira Bloom and Terry Lynne Carrington.
