Soviet MiG-15 Aces of the Korean War (Aircraft of the Aces)

Soviet MiG-15 Aces of the Korean War (Aircraft

The Soviet Union began assisting the People's Republic of China in its establishment of a modern air force in 1950, when Soviet Air Force regiments were sent to train local pilots. China's involvement in the Korean War in late October 1950 inevitably drew Soviet pilots into the war. A total of 52 Soviet pilots scored five or more victories in the Korean War. The history of these covert actions has been a long-buried secret and this book will be the first English publication to detail the only instance when the Cold War between Russia and the US became "hot." This book uncovers Soviet combat experiences during the Korean War from detailed unit histories and rare first-hand accounts. With access to extensive Russian archives, the authors offer an enthralling insight into an air war that has been largely covered up and neglected, illustrated with previously unpublished photographs and detailed full-color profiles.

A MiG-15 to Freedom: Memoir of the Wartime North Korean Defector Who First Delivered the Secret Fighter Jet to the Americans in 1953

A MiG-15 to Freedom: Memoir of the Wartime

On September 21, 1953, U.S. airmen at Kimpo Air Base near Seoul, Korea, were startled to see landing a MiG-15, the most advanced Soviet-built fighter plane of the era, piloted by Senior Lieutenant No Kum-Sok, a 21-year-old North Korean Air Force officer. Once he landed, Lieutenant No found that his mother had escaped to the South two years earlier, and they were soon reunited. At his request, No came to the United States and became a U.S. citizen. His story provides a unique insight into how North Korea conducted the Korean War and how he came to the decision to leave his homeland.

Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-15 Type 14 Fagot Fighter Aircraft 1949 Year 1/93 Scale Soviet Union USSR Aircraft Collection Model with Stand

Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-15 Type 14 Fagot Fighter Aircraft 1949

The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-15 (Russian: Микоян и Гуревич МиГ-15; USAF/DoD designation: Type 14; NATO reporting name: Fagot) is a jet fighter aircraft developed by Mikoyan-Gurevich for the Soviet Union. The MiG-15 was one of the first successful jet fighters to incorporate swept wings to achieve high transonic speeds. In combat over Korea, it outclassed straight-winged jet day fighters, which were largely relegated to ground-attack roles, and was quickly countered by the similar American swept-wing North American F-86 Sabre. The MiG-15 is often mentioned, along with the F-86 Sabre, as the best fighter aircraft of the Korean War. When refined into the more advanced MiG-17, the basic design would again surprise the West when it proved effective against supersonic fighters such as the Republic F-105 Thunderchief and McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II in the Vietnam War of the 1960s. The MiG-15 is believed to have been one of the most produced jet aircraft; in excess of 13,000 were manufactured. Licensed foreign production may have raised the production total to almost 18,000. The MiG-15 remains in service with the Korean People's Army Air Force as an advanced trainer.

At the beginning of the Korean War, the west discovered the MiG-15, the first mass-produced jet fighter built in the Soviet Union. This small device entered service at the end of 1950 in its improved version, the MiG-15bis, and in turn was quickly deployed to Korea where, with its powerful armament and handling, it was an unpleasant surprise for the forces of the United Nations, after finding their air superiority with the arrival of the latest version of the famous F-86 Sabre. While the “bundle” – a nickname given by NATO to the MiG-15 – was barely in use, MiG conceived its successor, the more efficient and wing modified MiG-17 (“Fresco”).The type was withdrawn from service in the USSR in the late sixties, however it had great success abroad. The “Fresco” was the most exported Soviet fighter until the arrival of its indirect successor, MiG-21 (see Planes & Pilots No. 12).

Famous Russian Aircraft: MiG - 15

Famous Russian Aircraft: MiG -

When the Mikoyan Gerevich MiG-15 first appeared in combat against the Western powers during the Korean War, it caused consternation among its opposition. Its performance far outstripped any jet fighter aircraft produced by the West at the time and its duels with the U.S. F86 Sabre have entered into aviation legend. The success of the MiG-15 was such that it went on to become the most widely produced jet fighter aircraft in history, and although figures vary, it is believed over 12,000 were built plus another 6,000 under license. The prototype of the distinctive fighter, built by the Mikoyan design bureau, was first deployed in the Korean War at the start of the 1950s. Its rugged build has ensured that a number survive in flying condition today. This book is a worthy addition to the acclaimed Famous Russian Aircraft series, with a comprehensive history of the aircraft’s development, design history, and use throughout the world.

Mikoyan MiG-17: Famous Russian Aircraft

Mikoyan MiG-17: Famous Russian

The Mikoyan Design Bureau's first swept-wing jet fighter, the MiG-15 Fagot, which gained world fame (or notoriety, depending on which side of the Iron Curtain you were on) after the Korean War, served as the basis for a more refined model, the MiG-17 Fresco. No sooner had the MiG-15 entered production and service than the designers decided to increase the wing sweep from 35 degrees to 45 degrees, initially by way of experiment. The resulting aircraft showed higher performance than the MiG-15, exceeding Mach 1 in a shallow dive during a test flight, something the Fagot had been unable to do.Following its production entry the MiG-17 was constantly improved, with Mikoyan developing a succession of production and experimental versions. Firstly, an afterburning engine was fitted to improve performance. Secondly, the increasingly frequent incursions by NATO reconnaissance aircraft, coupled with the knowledge that the West was developing all-weather fighters, led the Soviet 'fighter makers' to develop a number of radar-equipped interceptors. The all-weather versions of the MiG-17 proved to be the most successful and some of them were cleared for production. Starting in the mid-1950s, the MiG-17P, MiG-17PF and MiG-17PFU (the latter version was armed with air-to-air missiles) were the mos...

MiG-15 - Walk Around No. 40

MiG-15 - Walk Around No.

In late 1947 the prototype of the MiG-15 took to the air. The MiG-15 was intended to be a heavily armed, fast climbing intercepter of US bombers attacking the USSR. In 1950 the MiG-15 was employed in the conflict in Korea, showing more than a match for the allied fighters in theater (F-80s, Meteors, F-51s, etc.). It was only when the USAF brought in the F-86 Sabre that the MiG-15 had an equal adversary. It was with the success of the Mig-15 and other winning designs from the MiG Design Bureau, that the term "MiG" became synonymous with Soviet Fighter. This title includes inside and out coverage of the MiG-15 Fagot-A.

Daron Worldwide Trading Stamp F-86 Sabre Mig Mad

The F-86 Sabre is the United States' first swept wing jet-fighter. Produced by North American aviation it was used extensively against the Soviet MiG-15 in high-speed aerial dogfights during the Korean war (1950–1953). considered one of the best and most important fighter aircraft in that war, the F-86 is also rated highly in comparison with fighters of its generation. Although it was developed in the late 1940S and outdated by the end of the '50S, the Sabre proved versatile and adaptable. Aircraft continued to serve as a front-line fighter in numerous air forces until 1990's. The F-86 Sabre "MiG Mad marine" was Maj. John glenn's jet-fighter. John herschel Glenn, Jr. Was a U.S. Marine Corps pilot who flew with the U.S. Air Force's 51st fighter wing as an exchange pilot. He actually named his assigned aircraft "Lyn Annie Dave" for his wife and two kids but did not see much action. The flight crew surprised him with a new paint job, a big red m with letters trailing off it to read "MiG Mad marine" to change his luck. He shot down three MiGs near the Yalu River in the last 2 weeks of the war. After Korean war John Glenn (Colonel. Usmc. Ret.) went on to be a test pilot, an Astronaut and us Senator.
