MOH'S HARDNESS SCALE

MOH'S HARDNESS

This Moh's Hardness Scale collection is mounted on 5-1/2" x 7-1/8" full color cardstock, and holds nine specimens in their order from the softest (#1 talc) to the hardest (#10 diamond - not included). Indicators on the card tell students what will affect the surface of each of these 1/2"-3/4" specimens. Includes resealable storage bag. Grades 6-12.

Mohs' Hardness Test Kit for Industrial Applications

Mohs' Hardness Test Kit for Industrial

This tool is used in industry to determine the Hardness of a material according to the Mohs scale. The kit contains 8 different Mohs' Hardness Points, from Mohs 2 through Mohs 9. These points are used in a 'scratch test' on the material. For example, if the number 6 point scratches a particular material, but the number 5 point does not, then your material has a Mohs' Hardness value of about 5.5. A common use of this tool is in Concrete Hardness Testing to guide the technician in selecting the optimal abrasive to use in the concrete polishing. Other examples of industrial use of this Mohs' Hardness Test Kit - on touch screens, faucet finishes, and countertop materials. This kit comes packaged in a rugged molded Plastic Case with permanent Instructions, along with a Mohs' Hardness Table of common natural and man-made materials.

American Educational 9 Piece Scale of Hardness Collection without Diamond

American Educational 9 Piece Scale of Hardness Collection

The American Educational 2357 hardness scale collection is used for geological study, and has nine specimens ordered according to Mohs hardness scale, from softest (talc) to hardest (diamond, not included). The collection is number coded and includes a key sheet for identification. The 2357 has a compartmented tray for display and storage, with specimens that measure approximately 1 x 1-1/2 inches (L x W). (L is the horizontal distance from left to right; W is the horizontal distance from front to back.) Specimens in this collection may vary, based on availability at the time the product is packaged. The collection is suitable for grades 6 to 12 and ages 11 to 18.Science education products incorporate applied math and science principles into classroom and homeschool-based projects. Mohs Hardness Scale - Rock and Mineral Collection and ID chart - 9 real specimens by Dinosaurs Rock

Mohs Hardness Scale - Rock and Mineral Collection

Includes 9 genuine rocks/minerals/gemstones that are one through nine on the Mohs Hardness Scale. The Mohs scale of mineral hardness characterizes the scratch resistance of various minerals through the ability of a harder material to scratch a softer material. It was created in 1812 by the German geologist and mineralogist Friedrich Mohs and is one of several definitions of hardness in materials science.

Mohs Hardness Kit - Contains 9 specimens measuring approx. 1" (3cm) - Eisco Labs

Mohs Hardness Kit - Contains 9 specimens measuring

This kit contains nine specimens used as standards on the Mohs Hardness scale. These samples can be used in the classroom or in the field to test the hardness of an unknown mineral sample up to a hardness of 9. They can also be used in classroom activities to determine hardness relative to each other by testing each mineral on glass, copper, and other testing materials. This kit contains nine numbered specimens and a specimen key. Talc, contained in the kit, is chemically similar to asbestos; however, it is structurally different, and harmless as talc.

Mohs Scale of Hardness w/ Diamond Rock Mineral

Mohs Scale of Hardness w/ Diamond Rock

Quantity:  1 - Scale of Hardness Rock Set with Diamond   This is the traditional Mohs Scale with a small raw diamond included. There are ten number coded specimens measuring approximately 1 x 1 1/2 inches (except the diamond, don't you wish!).  The determination of the hardness of a mineral can be an important step toward its identification.  Hardness is the resistance which the smooth surface of a mineral offers to being scratched.  A diamond is the hardest of all substances and can only be scratched by another diamond.  Over a century ago, Friedrich Mohs by experimentation made up a scale of hardness which is referred to as Moh's scale.  It does not imply an exact hardness, but is set up so that any mineral can scratch all those beneath it in the scale, or can be scratched by those above it in the scale.  Since a diamond is the hardest it is given the number 10; talc is the softest so it is given number 1. Quartz is often used as a division in the scale and all those above 7 are called hard minerals.   Here are the samples included in the set and their number on the scale of hardness: 1 Talc 6 Feldspar 2 Gypsum 7 Quartz 3 Calcite 8 Beryl 4 Fluorite 9 Corundum 5 Apatite 10 Diamond Some very familiar objects can be used in conjunction with this scale.  A fingernail...

Mineral Identification Mohs' Hardness Pick Set, Mineralab Deluxe Kit, Plastic Case

Mineral Identification Mohs' Hardness Pick Set, Mineralab Deluxe

In your effort to identify an unknown mineral, its hardness, if determined, combined with other properties, can narrow your search to just a handful of possibilities. As an example, if a No. 5 pick scratches the mineral, but a No. 4 pick does not, then your mineral's hardness is between 4 and 5. Now check the included table of minerals listing hardness values to aid in identifying the unknown mineral. Mineralab picks are made of metals and alloys of hardness values equal to 2 through 9 on Mohs hardness scale. Because the picks are made of metal, they are easily ground to sharp points which will not easily break off and which can be easily sharpened. After all, a dull pick leaves doubt. Mineral Identification Mohs' Hardness Pick Set, Mineralab Deluxe Kit, Plastic Case: *** Four double-ended picks with eight points comprising 2 and 3, 4 and 5, 6 and 7, 8 and 9 on Mohs' hardness scale. *** High quality brass pinch vises. *** A glass plate (hardness of about 5.5) which, when scratched, quickly distinguishes hard from soft minerals. *** A second hardness plate with a hardness value of 3 5. *** A white streak plate for testing a mineral's streak color. *** A magnet to test magnetic rocks such as magnetite and pyrrhotite. *** A 100 grit polishing stone to keep the points sharp. *** An a...
