Faberge: Lost and Found : The Recently Discovered

For more than 25 years, Carl Faberge and his firm served as jeweller and goldsmith to the tsars of Russia, European royalty, and the powerful and influential throughout the world. The masterpieces created by Faberge in the late 19th and early 20th centuries are almost legendary treasures of superb workmanship and originality. A. Kenneth Snowman tells the story of his recent and astonishing discovery in St Petersburg of two of the original design books from the House of Faberge. Within their pages are countless meticulous watercolour and ink drawings of virtually every item made by the company from 1909 to 1915. Each design is dated and accompanied by detailed handwritten instructions as to composition and execution. Hundreds of these invaluable and incredibly beautiful drawings are reproduced here for the first time, most in full colour, with captions describing the gems, the materials to be used, and the date of manufacture. Often the actual finished pieces are photographed next to the original drawings. Among the ingenious marvels are those commissioned for the 300th anniversary celebration of the House of Romanoff, and the famous miniature and large Imperial Easter eggs, including the one owned by Queen Elizabeth II. Gold boxes, animal and bird carvings, necklaces, earrings, p...

The firm of Fabergé, jeweler to the Russian court, was founded in St. Petersburg in 1842. Expanded by the founder’s son, Peter Carl Fabergé (1846–1920), the firm became one of the most famous jewelers of the late nineteenth to early twentieth centuries. Major American collectors, such as Marjorie Merriweather Post, played a significant role in Fabergé’s success after the fall of the imperial regime, and her mansion at Hillwood in Washington, DC now has a collection of about ninety pieces, including two imperial Easter eggs, various works of art of imperial provenance, silver, jewelry, hardstone, and religious items.Recent research on Fabergé, revelations from the Russian public archives, and the discovery of objects thought to be lost have brought to light new information about Fabergé’s career and his creations, including material on several of Hillwood’s Fabergé items. With fabulous new photography, exquisite works of art, and illuminating focus spreads by Fabergé experts, this new volume presents the firm in the broader history of nineteenth to twentieth century jewelry and goldsmithing, documents new attributions and provenances, and examines our continuing fascination with Fabergé’s remarkable work.

Fabergé: His Masters and Artisans

Fabergé: His Masters and

Few artists are as well-known as Carl Fabergé (1846–1920)—his name alone conjures up images of his brilliantly ornate egg artworks. Wherever his works are shown, whether at exhibitions or in auction rooms, they delight and awe viewers.              This book tells the story of Fabergé and his work as jeweler to the Russian imperial court—but it goes beyond that. To make his incredibly ornate creations, Fabergé required support—lots of it. Without countless other people working behind the scenes, including designers, master goldsmiths, and silversmiths, Fabergé’s business could not have flourished. Fabergé: His Masters and Artisans lifts these craftsmen into the limelight, not only because their work deserves our attention, but because the captivating stories of their lives and careers add appreciably to what is known of the working processes at Fabergé’s studio. Ulla Tillander-Godenhielm also explores jewelry manufacturing methods, touches on the company’s well known and influential customers, and, of course, showcases Fabergé’s very recognizable style and creativity. The book offers much that will be new even to well-read aficionados, interweaving images of the works with reminiscences, letters, and personal photographs. No fan of Fabergé sh...
