The Ibis Print Gallery - Folk Art : ''Innocence'' (c.1830) - Giclee Fine Art Print
The Ibis Print Gallery - Folk Art :
This folk art piece is thought to have originated from New York City around 1830. Characteristic of the genre, the artist's naïveté towards the rules of proportion and perspective has an effect that renders the work all the more endearing for its imperfections. Though the depiction of children as the embodiment of innocence had been in fashion since the Enlightenment, it was only during the 1830s that campaigns for child labor reform first gained traction. The modern concept of the sanctity of childhood would develop over the course of the 19th century.

King of the Western Saddle: The Sheridan Saddle and the Art of Don King (Folk Art and Artists Series)
King of the Western Saddle: The Sheridan Saddle
The saddle has become an American icon. Wranglers rely on saddles every day, but discerning outsiders favor them for image enhancement and self-expression. Thus saddles turn up in paintings, films, even advertisements for cigarettes and automobiles. In the marketplace of western memorabilia they have great value.Saddles--sometimes intricately and exquisitely carved--are no longer merely cowboy paraphernalia. At their most elaborate, they have a highly developed aesthetic. In America, saddlemaking can be regarded as one of the most complex and distinctly regional of western crafts. One of the most famous saddlemakers is Donald L. King of Sheridan, Wyoming. His Sheridan-style saddle, one of the finest of all western saddles in craftsmanship and beauty, is commissioned regularly for championship rodeo trophies and is prized by collectors. The son of an itinerant cowboy, King was immersed in the traditions of ranch life and crafts from an early age. Today he is acknowledged as the creator of the most influential style in western leathercraft. His intricate, hand-tooled works bear his signature emblem, the wild rose, and other floral elements. By the 1960s saddle aficionados had discovered him, and King's Saddlery became the center of a large community of saddlemakers. Within the follow...

The Rock Art of Texas Indians
The Rock Art of Texas
The Rock Art of Texas Indians has been long out-of-print, and first editions are rare and costly. This reproduction of that edition will make a monumental and classic work available to a whole new generation of readers. After viewing Indian rock paintings on a bluff above the Concho River near Paint Rock, Texas, in 1934, the late Dallas artist Forrest Kirkland was seized with an idea. He wrote later, "Here was a veritable gallery of primitive art at the mercy of the elements and the hands of a destructive people. In a few more years only the hundreds of deeply carved names and smears of modern paint would remain to mark the site of the paintings left by the Indians.... What was at first merely a suggestion in my mind soon became a solemn command. I was a trained artist able to make accurate copies of these Indian paintings. I should save them from total ruin."Kirkland devoted a good part of the rest of his life to copying pictographs and petroglyphs at some eighty far-flung sites in Texas. In The Rock Art of Texas Indians, his meticulous watercolor copies of this rich and diversified art are reproduced, thirty-two in full color, the rest in black and white. The informative and engaging text is contributed by W. W. Newcomb, Jr., former director of the Texas Memorial Museum and auth...

Miss Addie's Gift: Portrait of an American Folk Artist
Miss Addie's Gift: Portrait of an American Folk
MISS ADDIE’S GIFT; Portrait of an American Folk Artist, is a biography/full-color catalogue/tribute to North Carolina self-taught artist, Addie James (1943-2011). Author Kate Merrill, longtime gallery owner and co-owner of Merrill-Jennings Galleries in Davidson, NC, represented Miss Addie from 2000 to Addie’s death in 2011, and during that time helped elevate the artist to national prominence. The text not only includes Kate’s assessment of how to place Addie in art history--- in that complex maze of what is lumped together as primitive, naïve, folk, or outsider art--- but also conveys Kate’s deep friendship with her subject. After hours of taped interviews, the text also weaves Addie’s first-person narrative as well as Addie’s original poems through the presentation. The result is a colorful art book which evolves as a portrait of as unique human being who inspires hope in a troubled time when peace and joy seem all but lost. As opposed to being an academic critique, Miss Addie’s Gift, should appeal to a mainstream audience, especially all women, African Americans, art and folk art lovers---indeed anyone open to an inspirational message. Addie James was an African American mother of five, grandmother of six, who never learned to drive a car, nor did she stray far ...
